Czech under-23 rider Daniel Vysocan has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for CERA, the Pierre Baguette Cycling Team announced Tuesday.
Vysocan’s A-sample showed the presence of CERA, the banned blood-booster, following an out-of-competition test carried out on September 25 in Zurich.
The UCI informed the team of the result on November 4.
Pending analysis of his B-sample, Vysocan is suspended, and his contract will be terminated if the second test confirms the initial finding, officials said.
“Pierre Baguette Cycling Team enforces an absolute zero-tolerance policy regarding doping,” the team said in a statement. “We are fully committed to safeguarding the integrity of cycling, a sport we deeply respect, by refusing any involvement in illicit activities, prohibited substances, or any actions that compromise our core values.
“Every team member is held to the highest standards of integrity and accountability, and any deviation from these standards is not accepted.”
No comment yet from UCI
The 20-year-old saw no major victories on his palmarès, and finished 16th at the Tour de l’Avenir this summer.
Officials said that Vysocan’s entry into the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich was managed independently, with no involvement or support from the Pierre Baguette Cycling Team, which points out he last raced with the squad in early September.
The team distanced itself from Vysocan’s activities at the championships, and said he would be fired if the B-sample returns positive.
The UCI has not yet commented on the case.
Former three-time world champion Peter Sagan closed out his racing career this summer with the Continental-level Slovakian team.
2nd CERA case this summer
It’s the second case involving CERA, the notorious blood-doping product from the 2000s, in the past few months.
In September, Ilkhan Dostiyev, 22, tested positive for CERA during a doping control. Astana-Qazaqstan said he admitted use of the drug and jettisoned him from the team.
CERA (continuous erythropoietin receptor activator) is a variant of EPO, and is relatively easy to detect. Medically, it is used to treat anemia for patients with kidney disease.
Riders such as Riccardo Riccò, Stefan Schumacher, Danilo Di Luca, Bernhard Kohl, and Davide Rebellin were also busted for CERA in the 2000s.
