André Drege, a Norwegian pro on Team Coop-Repsol, died Saturday in a crash in stage 4 at the Tour of Austria. He was 25.

Tour of Austria officials confirmed the tragic news late Saturday afternoon.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of André Drege. On Saturday 6th July following a very serious crash during the descent of the Großglockner at stage 4 of the Tour of Austria, André crashed and sustained severe injuries,” a race note read.

“Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with André’s family and loved ones, his team Coop-Repsol, during this incredibly difficult time.”

Austrian media reported that Drege crashed during a descent in the 151.7km sixth stage from St. Johann Alpendorf to Kals. The stage featured two climbs higher than 2,400m in the middle of the route high in the Austrian Alps.

More details about the accident are not yet known.

The stage was won by Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), but the podium ceremony was canceled after the racing tragedy, media reports indicated. It’s uncertain if the race will continue with Sunday’s final stage. Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) is leading.

Several teams and professional cyclists quickly took to social media to share their condolences with the team and Drege’s family and friends.

Drege joined the Continental-level team in 2021, and was a prolific winner in the U23 and lower-tiered events.

The tragedy reminded many of the high-speed crash that claimed the life of Gino Mäder (Bahrain Victorious) during the 2023 Tour de Suisse.

Racers competing at the Tour de France were still racing Saturday’s eighth stage when the tragic news was confirmed.
