Most companies you find at the MADE bike show make custom parts. Black Magic Paint is a little bit different. Black Magic is a custom bike builder and a dealer with access to some of the most desirable brands on the market. That’s really only the side dish though.

Black Magic owner Ben Corbalis talks through the details of what makes this bike so incredible and what the company is capable of.

What Black Magic actually does is incredible custom paint. The dealer status matters because it allows them to help you with a build from beginning to end. If you have something in mind, Black Magic can start by sourcing the frame for you then help you to pick all the components and finally to paint and assemble a final, rideable bike. Black Magic even has status as a Specialized custom refinisher meaning your final painted bike will retain the same factory warranty as any other Specialized bike.

Outside of MADE, Black Magic is keen to highlight a partnership with longtime friend Kerry Werner. For those unfamiliar, Werner rode for “multiple USA world championships teams for XC, MTB, and cyclocross.” During that time, he can count 33 UCI wins, U23 XC MTB national championship, 3 time Division One Collegiate CX National Championships, and a Pan American CX Championship. This year he’s “focusing mostly on gravel and MTB stage racing while balancing working full time in the bike industry for BikeFlights” but he’s also landed a sponsorship deal with Enve. Black Magic is then stepping in to supply Werner “with a full fleet of custom painted drop bar bikes including the MOG, Melee, and Fray” as well as a custom painted ENVE equipped mountain bike. Of course, that’s just one customer among many.

This year at MADE, Black Magic has another customer bike that’s a bit more involved. To be fair, owner Ben Corbalis didn’t cover exactly how long the Werner bikes represented but this one took 100 hours and it’s not even done yet. Just like many custom show projects across a wide range of industries, a bike like this getting to MADE means last-minute work and sleepless nights. There are still a number of parts that haven’t yet arrived including the Lightweight Fenweg EVO Pro 63 Black Edition wheelset that will pair with Vittoria Corsa PRO Tubeless-Ready 700×32 tires. Once those show up, there’s still another 10-ish hours of paint work on both the rims and hubs.

Much of the reason for those last minute sleepless nights is the Pinarello Dogma F frameset that the build started with. As I chatted with Corbalis earlier in the year at the Enve b builder roundup, he wasn’t so sure that it would arrive at all. Turns out it did, but only barely.

Once it arrived, that’s when the work began on the paint. Black Magic applied a “five color horizontal kandy fade with black lines. Gold Leaf and Turquoise graphics. Black and Pink Kandy fade inside the fork and rear stays.” The pedals are Look Keo Blade with custom painted blades to match and you’ll find a similar treatment on the CeramicSpeed oversized pulley cage.

To suitably match the paint work, the rest of the build starts with the latest SRAM RED road groupset. From that base, Black Magic started by swapping the already mentioned OSPW but the crank is swapped too. Instead of sticking to SRAM, the crank is a SRM Origin PM9 unit. Given that the PM9 uses a modular design it’s easy to swap pieces during the build and this Pinarello is using the Cybrei Carbon crank arms which represent the lightest option available. Added to that there’s Carbon Ti carbon chainrings in an AXS compatible 46/33 configuration.

Touchpoints start with the Pinarello Talon Ultra Light integrated bar and stem. The chosen saddle is the Fizik Vento Argo R1 which is not a 3D printed piece. Instead of additive manufacturing, Black Magic went with a saddle that uses a traditional cover then swapped it for a custom covering to match the custom leather bar tape on the bars.
